Draft COP 2017-2020

Ugh, another long break without posting. I've been dealing with minor but intensely annoying health issues...after a long, long time of my hypothyroidism being stable to the point I'd forget about it, it's now not at all and the solution of decreasing meds was an absolutely terrible one so now I'm very very very hypothyroid (ic???) and the fatigue is a total killer, not up for much other than work and work is a nightmare with it. Complete nuisance when med changes take so long to take affect. Moving on...the draft COP for the next quad!

Anyway, this will be short! In good news...

Note: Handpsring fwd on- tucked double salto fwd off: If the 2nd salto is not completed because the gymnast lands on the feet and bottom simultaneously, then the vault will be recognised as Handspring fwd on- Tucked fwd Salto off

This had better make it to the final version OR ELSE. They'd want the wording watertight also. Another good bit of news lurking is that the forward element will be scrapped from floor, meaning no daft front or side aerials. It wasn't ever something I felt really strong about, but it was definitely jarring to choreography and for that reason, it's welcome.

The 2 point penalty for vaulting with one arm is back, I'd be interested to know how strict that will be followed in practice..must true propulsion be in evidence from both hands or will touching the board be a grey area?

The arabian double layout, the Dos Santos II, is now a H. YES finally! Maybe it will encourage someone to actually do this skill.

I haven't delved fully into it to see changes to combinations/connections etc. on beam and bars but will be doing so. Looks like Netherlands are being punished for underuse of acro skills on floor, floor will need 3 dance skills and 3 acro skills and 2 extra skills...not 100% about these two skills, if they are compulsory or allowed or what. If they're not compulsory, they might as well be since everyone will use them to drive difficulty.

What I definitely don't like is devaluing of vaults. I don't really see the point of trying to bring it more into line with other events, by its very nature it's very quick so execution will always be much higher than others. It just seems unneccessary and will for me take away from the excitement of ranking and scoring a little bit.

I definitely have some more reading to do. While it is the draft, I'm sure a lot of it will end up finalised. What are your thoughts? Favourite change? Worst? What have they overlooked? Who should get a raise for FINALLY seeing the danger of the Produnova?

  1. Vaults are being downgraded because requirements for other events will only add up to 2 points, as opposed to 2.5 now. So gymnasts will lose 0.5 in each event and bringing vault values down is a way to try to keep everything sort of even across all events.

    1. Thanks, not sure how I missed that? I definitely knew about floor losing a requirement, not sure if I did about the others but I didn't connect it with vault d-scores either way, durrr. That's definitely better than just arbitrarily lowering them. Will take a while to get used to though.

  2. Hi Catherine, hope your health is better this week than last.

My major takeaway from the provisional code is that power-tumbler types will be at a larger advantage in this code for teams and the all-around than the previous quads.

Bars is really nerfed this quad. The killer rule is that only two skills in the same skill family will be counted for Credit, Composition and Connection - and this is applied in chronological order of presented skills. While it doesn't apply to giant swings or kips - like the Chinese routines that utilize many long swing pirouettes - it does affect stalder, toe-on, clear-hip and inbar family skills. Take Becky Downie - she competes many stalder and clear-hip family elements and would have to lose counting her ricna from her ricna to pak combo. She'll lose the E skill and the connection bonus, dropping about 0.4 points to contemporary routines. Then you can look at Madison Desch, who competes 5 stalder elements. Because order is important, her ricna+pak (pak will receive composition, credit), chow1/2 and stalder 1/1 are not counted. She loses 0.2 for connection, 0.5 for the pirouette requirement and the value of the skills. Her score goes from 6.2 in the current code to 4.0-ish in the new code, whereas Huang Huidan's and Yao Jinnan's routines drop from high 6 to 6.3. It will be interesting to see what code breakers will come up with to make a huge scoring routine, but overall, I just don't imagine lithe flexible gymnasts leveraging their high bars scores in AA over their not as great vault or floor.

Floor is largely the same but I thought front tumbling is now required in an acro line - and a front tumble must take off from two feet. This is an advantage to strong tumblers. The 3 acro, 3 dance is the minimum - the last two skills may be dance, acro or other (handstand holds, unlikely to see still). Maybe the dutch can still manage two passes by doing a combination pass, sneaking the tumbling requirements in with one run.

Big beam dismounts are incentivized, the B+F 0.2 bonus of the 2009 quad has returned - so the patterson dismount, which really requires a roud-off is really worth 0.9 points for chucking it. While the possibilities of the mixed and dance combos sound great, there are not many low risk high value combinations - at least when compared to throwing a big dismount - so I believe the acrobatic skill set on beam will probably still reign supreme.

And even with vault values being dropped, powerful gymnasts will still have an advantage as the nature of vault E scores favors gymnasts who have power. Even thought there are some nice non-DTY vaults out there, they don't have flight or distance to ever score as high as a DTY. Similarly the speed of rotation in DTY and above skills hides form errors. This is why an absolutely gorgeous FTY scores 9.2 and an absolutely gorgeous DTY scores 9.6.

Anyway, I don't think the code is moving in the wrong direction necessarily, but it's more of the same of what we've been seeing.

  3. I don't think the way you put regarding the produnova change things much ;(. Someone will just make sure their feet touch first and then will ask for a replay inquiry saying their feet touch first.

As for the 2 hand vt, it wont be cut and dry eiher. I never see mykayla successfully completely her cheng with truly only 1 arm. even if the other arm only barely touch it does provide some small propulsive balancing force.

Looks to me like scores are decreasing all across the board to some degrees. Oh well..
